Section 5: Security

The Online Notary Public has additional duties regarding the Online Notarization to ensure the integrity, security and authenticity of the transaction.

The Online Notary Public must keep both an electronic journal and a backup copy of the electronic journal (details of the content are in a later module). This journal and its backup, along with any other records, must be protected from unauthorized access. Likewise, the Online Notary Public’s electronic seal must be kept current and under the sole control of the Online Notary Public and the chosen RON Service Provider.

If there has been unauthorized use of, or compromise to the security of, the electronic journal, electronic seal, or electronic signature, the Online Notary Public must notify the Governor’s Legal Office for Notaries within 7 days of discovering the compromise.

The requirements for security may be updated as technology continues to improve.
